Buying a decent classic car would be anybody's dream, but how does one go about it? First of all, a good knowledge about classic cars is your most effective tool when deciding to purchase a classic car. Noteworthy is the fact that the whole affair of buying classic cars can be more arduous even for those experienced in the trade and is entirely different when compared to buying modern cars. At the end of the deal, you sure don't want to end up paying more. Here are some useful tips that will aid you in finding a top notch classic car to enjoy for a long time to come.

* The first and foremost thing is deciding what you expect or want in a classic car. Make sure you get the facts straight - are you aiming to qualify for competitions or do you just want to drive a classic car for the pleasure of it? For people wanting to drive the car at all times and expecting it to be in a good condition, the latter wouldn't be the most preferable choice. That said, if you'd like to compete, make sure you spend some more time, and look for a classic car in good condition.

* After getting to know your expectations and how you'd be using the car, spending some time on research is advisable. Various cars have their own weak points and problems in certain areas, so being wary of the situation before buying is recommended. Make sure you dedicate enough time to researching the particular model, as well as the year you're going for, so you have a good idea about what to look for when considering a car.

* After visually inspecting the car, why not test drive the car? It's strongly recommended not to buy a used classic car without having test driven it yourself. Ask the owner to start the car and have a stern look at the car's tailpipe. Usually, if the smoke's blue or black, then there are some problem with the car. Take the car out for a short drive. While driving, make sure you're aware of the car's power, look out for a particular tilt occurring at the front and be alert to any shifts in the car. This will enable you to get the best deal done without having to shell out too much money on repairs once bought.

* Get hold of proper records and documentation pertaining to the car, as it would be best to know of any previous repairs done to the car over the years. In case the owner tricks you into saying they don't have any records, decide wisely before buying the car.

* The car might look great and have a great feel when driving it, but have it thoroughly inspected by a trustworthy mechanic before you buy. This is because a mechanic is likely to have more knowledge and might identify any problems the car could have in the future. You probably might have overlooked this aspect, and it's always handy to get a mechanic test the car and get a complete report before even talking or making a deal on the desired car.

* Try getting a complete history of the car even though the mechanic's given the nod. This is a safe way to ensure that the car has not been stolen. You could try finding this information on the web, and any money you pay for such information is likely to be modest and will be money well spent.
